Introduction
The major objectives of the special interest seminar are to review and highlight the present state of the art and recent trends in the field of the development, fabrication and characterisation of nano-structured and ultrafine grained hardmetals. A general overview on nano, near-nano and ultrafine hardmetals obtained by conventional powder metallurgy routes will be given. Emerging trends in the field of fabrication of near-nano and submicron WC powders and hardmetals will be described. Novel approaches to the production of nano-structured WC-based hard materials and coatings will be outlined. Finally, progress in the characterisation of hardmetals at the nanoscale by transmission electron microscopy will be reported.
